Moving Slovenia gave us the first insight into the transnational autonomous vehicle-testing project; State secretary Nina Mauhler hopes to see new developments regarding the second tube of the Karavanke tunnel within a few weeks; and Slovenian Railways announce the Ljubljana–Vienna travel duration shortening to four hours
The Maribor–Šentilj railway upgrade is currently in a full swing. Seeing that this is a single-track railway, it needed to be closed on 25th October. The closure will be in effect until 15th December, meaning there will be no railway connection between Maribor and Austria until then. This has created many problems in cargo transport across Slovenia. The Slovenian Infrastructure Agency plans to build the second track to Šentilj after 2022.
Austria started the drilling works for the second tube of the Karavanke tunnel already in September, whereas in Slovenia the project is stuck in the audit procedure. Nina Mauhler, State Secretary at the Ministry of Infrastructure, says “I hope this will be resolved within a few weeks, although it will be difficult for us to catch Austria even if we start at the beginning of the next year.”
Daniel Avdagič, AV Living Lab: Initially, the autonomous vehicle-testing infrastructure in the area between Slovenia, Hungary and Austria will be used by manufacturers of cars and spare parts.
Miloš Rovšnik, Deputy Director of Slovenian Railways – Passenger Transport: The Ljubljana–Vienna travel duration will be shortened to four hours within three to four years.
Sebastian Sperker, Rail Cargo Carrier: There is still significantly too much wait time in international cargo transport, especially border wait time; we also wait for passenger trains very often because of single-track railways.
Johannes Lieberman, Wiener Linien, coordinator of Seestadt-Aspern autonomous minibus, suggests that we start testing autonomous vehicles. He says that the Vienna public transport provider has been purchasing many e-busses.
